A United Airlines flight landed safely at Sydney Airport after the pilot issued a mayday call caused by low fuel levels.

Flight UA839, carrying 194 people, made a mandatory mayday call Thursday as the flight completed its 15-hour trip from Los Angeles.

Despite the emergency response on the ground,  passengers on board the 787-900 Dreamliner were completely unaware of the issue.

In a statement, the airline said: “United flight 839 from Los Angeles to Sydney landed safely in Sydney after following a mechanical issue. The aircraft taxied to the gate and all customers disembarked normally.”

Some major roads around the airport were closed as a precaution.

The airport was not shut down during the emergency response, and it’s understood there were no delays to flights.
