How long the drive actually takes
Google Maps says 11 hours. Plan for 13. The 537 km route runs Delhi → Panipat → Ambala → Chandigarh → Bilaspur → Mandi → Kullu → Manali, and the last 120 km through the Mandi–Kullu stretch is slow regardless of how well the rest goes.
The departure time that changes everything
Leave Delhi between 4 AM and 5 AM. You clear Murthal by sunrise, cross Chandigarh before the office rush, and reach Mandi in daylight. A 9 AM start puts you on the hill section after dark, which adds two hours and a lot of stress.
Where to stop
- Murthal (km 80) — the standard paratha breakfast stop, 30 minutes.
- Ambala or Zirakpur (km 200) — fuel, washrooms, coffee.
- Sundar Nagar (km 430) — lunch by the lake, and the last comfortable break before the climb.
What it costs in 2026
| Vehicle | One way | Round trip (4 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan (Dzire) | ₹11,000 | ₹19,500 |
| SUV (Ertiga) | ₹13,500 | ₹24,000 |
| Innova Crysta | ₹16,000 | ₹28,000 |
| Tempo Traveller 12+1 | ₹24,000 | ₹42,000 |
Those figures include fuel and driver. Toll is roughly ₹700 each way, and a driver night allowance of ₹300 per night applies on round trips.
Three things travellers get wrong
First, booking a small hatchback to save ₹2,000 — the climb past Mandi is where that decision hurts. Second, planning Rohtang or Atal Tunnel on arrival day; you will be too tired. Third, skipping the permit check for Rohtang Pass, which is limited daily and must be arranged the day before.
If you want this handled end to end, our Himachal package covers the drive, hotels and sightseeing across five days.
